About

Founded in 1967, the Whale River has provided world class Atlantic salmon fishing for 50 years. We are family owned and operated and seek to provide a friendly fly fishing experience. The camp is located on Standora island at the junction of the Whale and the Wheeler river. Placed at the 57 latitude, the Whale River is one of the last frontiers for Atlantic Salmon fishing. Whale River Outfitters are the only operating outfitter on the river system so there is no need to worry about unwanted anglers. This is a fishing experience that will connect you with nature and bring you back in time. We don't offer wireless internet, tv, electricity, or any of the other distractions of the modern world, only fishing and the good times shared with your fellow anglers. We provide complete lodging in the form of comfortable single or double bed cabins constructed from native black spruce. A day of fishing can be broken down into two options, a day on the lower river or upper river.  The lower river, surrounding camp, consists of slower flowing pools that can be easily fished from shore or boat if desired. The upper river contains fast moving rapids which offers a unique challenge when playing a fish. The upper river pools stock up with salmon that can take you a 100 yards down the rapids in a blink of an eye. The average size of our salmon are about 8-10 lbs with salmon in the 15-20lb range caught frequently. An experienced angler can hook anywhere from 2-5 salmon a day during the peak run and inexperienced salmon anglers can easily learn the sport. Unique to this river is that the established pools are contained only within a 10 mile stretch of the river. Beyond that stretch are miles and miles of salmon pools yet to be discovered. Prime fishing is during the month of August.
